Frumpy Fat & 54, Wants To Stop Eating Meat

I really would like to stop eating meats – do you have any suggestions as to how I can approach this?

I really do not know where to start. I feel tired all the time – especially in the afternoon. I am overweight and feel frumpy. At 54 I am not ready to give up but I do not want to spend the rest of my life fat and miserable.

From previous diets I know I always feel better when I eat a lot of fresh vegetables and fruit. I really would like to stop eating meats – do you have any suggestions as to how I can approach this? Thank you – V. J.

Savvy Vegetarian Advice:

Changing your diet is a process.

Every day, do something different, and it’ll have a cumulative effect. I have several suggestions for you to try:

1. Replace the meat in your diet gradually with healthy foods that you enjoy eating – like the fresh vegetables and fruit you mentioned. Get some new cookbooks, or check out our recipes.Try different recipes and combinations of foods until you find what works for you. Be adventurous – several times a week, try something you’ve never eaten before. That approach will perk up your diet and help lift you out of the doldrums.

2. 54 is “move it or lose it” time. Find a fun physical activity to do every day, in a group as often as possible – join a yoga, swimming, or walking group for example. Various studies have shown that exercising elevates your mood, because it increases endorphins. You’ll feel more energetic and better about your body. I know that everyday I exercise, it’s like magic – I feel 10 years younger! Maybe more!

3. Make sure that your iron, B12 and Vit. D blood levels are good. If not, take supplements, and get some sun on your body – the best way to create Vit. D. Fresh fruit and veg (all colors) will help with vitamins and minerals, and you should also have whole grains and legumes for B vitamins.

Omega 3’s are important too – flax seed, avocado, walnuts, green veggies, sea veggies, grains and legumes are plant sources. Eggs or fish oil are animal sources.
