Savvy Vegetarian Blog - News and OpinionVegetarian Lifestyle, Environment, HealthFri, 18 Mar 2005Once again, I found something very interesting in my local alternative media - this time, The Heartland Spirit in Fairfield, Iowa. This is an article posted on Feb. 24th, 2005 on Wired News, a technology news blog. From author Stephen Leahy, and re-printed by HS for those of us who can't blog all the time. It's about the construction of gigantic solar towers, occupying as much territory as a small town, reaching heights of several thousand feet, costing in the neighbourhood of $500 million, and generating enough electricity for 200,000 homes. That's all kind of scary, but the good news is it would keep 830,000 tons of greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere each year. That's wonderful, but to me the thinking behind this is weird. They want to replace nuclear power plants and hydro-electric dams with something ecological on the same gigantic scale, which seems contradictory. For 500 million, you could put up a lot of solar collectors on a lot of people's roofs, and not have to use up 25,000 acres of farmland. But read the article yourself and see if you'd want to live next door to the Solar Tower of Power permanent link to this entry |
