Last I heard, giant pizza chains don’t yet offer vegan pizza. You can buy them frozen, but they’re expensive, and a pale imitation of REAL pizza.

Don’t be fooled by the long lists of ingredients and directions into thinking that pizza is complicated to make! It’s not! Making pizza is just a simple step by step process. Once you’ve done it once you’ll be able to make pizza in your sleep. And it’s ideal for cooking with kids!

By the way, you can freeze your homemade pizza for future pizza attacks, or when ordering a pizza is the only thing you have the energy to do. Easier, cheaper and healthier to pull a pizza out of the freezer and bake it!

Do you know the history of pizza?
According to Wikipedia, the origin of the word “pizza” is unclear, but by 997 it had appeared in Medieval Latin, and in 16th century Naples a galette flatbread was referred to as a pizza. The pizza was a baker’s tool: a dough used to verify the temperature of the oven. A dish of the poor people, it was sold in the street and was not considered a kitchen recipe for a long time.

In June 1889, to honor the Queen consort of Italy, chef Raffaele Esposito created the “Pizza Margherita,” a pizza garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil, to represent the colors of the Italian flag. He was the first to add cheese.

By the late 18th century it was common for the poor of the area around Naples to add tomato (introduced by Americans) to their yeast-based flat bread. The dish became a local specialty and pizza became a tourist attraction of Naples. The first pizzeria in America, generally believed to have been founded by Gennaro Lombardi in Little Italy, Manhattan, was established in 1905 and remains one of the country’s icons today.

Why is pizza so much fun to eat?
It’s gooey, warm and spicy. And with all the different toppings you can put on them, plus cheese (or vegan cheese) and the crust, it’s a whole meal.

Several ways to make the pizza healthier are to use whole wheat flour or gluten-free baking mix, lots of vegetables, and only organic tomato sauce. You can substitute a nut cheese, shredded veggies, crumbled tofu mixed with nutritional yeast or skip the cheese altogether.

    Hi,

    Thanks for dropping by my blog! Bhaturas are different from puris. The dough for puri is kneaded with water but for bhaturas we use Curd/yoghurt and let it sit for 2-3 hrs to ferment. Rolling bhaturas is more tricky than puris. hope that helped.
