Vegetarian Advice: Pregnant, Craves FishQuestion: ... pregnant, craving fish. My vegetarian husband discourages me and says control my craving ... what do I do?I was a voracious meat eater, but for the last 5 years I stopped eating meat, as I realized it involves a lot of brutality, killing and sin. Now I am into pregnancy nausea and have a craving for fish. My vegetarian husband discourages me, and says that I should control my craving. But all the time I fancy eating all kinds of fish delicacies. What do I do? - R. S. Savvy Vegetarian AdviceDear R. S., If you crave fish, perhaps it's because you need more protein in your diet, or the fats, minerals and vitamins which are found in fish. Check this site for more information about fish nutrients. Having had three children, I agree with Ayurveda that a pregnant woman should have her desires fulfilled, because she naturally desires what is needed for the baby, and a contented Mom makes a contented baby. Frustrated desire isn't good for you or your baby. So I would say eat some fish, enough to satisfy your desire, then move on. Be careful, as fish can be high in mercury. Check this site for information on safe fish products. See where you can make nutrition improvements to help keep cravings in check. If you aren't already, take a good quality pre-natal supplement, eat plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and legumes. Focus on fresh food, rather than processed. Have a Happy Baby!
