Apple Cider, Healthy Traditional Comfort Food

How To Do It Right - A Healthy Apple Cider Recipe

You wouldn't think you'd need a recipe for apple cider, but this traditional comfort food has lost it's way, and unhealthy versions abound. So here's our how to.

Start with high quality organic apple juice. Those gallon glass bottles from Knudson are a good bet. Or the fresh pressed sold by that guy in the overalls at the farmers market. Use raw whole dried spices, not a packaged flavor mix. And don't boil it, just heat it. If you have a crock pot, that's a handy way to keep it hot, but simmering on the stove works too.

Hot apple cider is a winter drink, good to serve to a crowd during or after vigorous outdoor exercise, or while watching others exercise, or at a party or potluck. It goes well with cookies and popcorn.

Ingredients and directions for one to four quarts apple cider

  • Organic apple juice
  • Use more or less spice depending on quantity
  • 4 - 10 whole cloves
  • 2 - 6 green cardamom pods
  • 1 /2 - 1 whole cinnamon stick
  • *1 thin slice fresh ginger, optional
  • Heat the apple juice with the spices on the stove or in the crock pot
  • When using a crock pot, start it a few hours ahead of time, or heat on the stove, then transfer to the crock pot.
