It's premade from flour, dried (or not), cooked in water, then drained and subjected to various improvements, as a grain would be. However, a grain such as rice can be happily eaten all by itself, but pasta cries out for herbs, olive oil, sauces, veggies, cheeses, and other additions to be complete. That's why pasta is known to be fattening! It's not the pasta, it's what you eat with it, and how much you eat of it. Some people eat whole grain pasta, with the logic that if whole grains are good, then whole grain pasta must also be A Good Thing. Some people can't understand why anyone would do that to pasta, and stick with traditional semolina pasta. Do whatever suits you, and enjoy your pasta!
