Previously I indexed eco-articles into five categories: environment, green living, non-gmo, organic and sustainable. Increasingly they wanted to blend into one category which I finally realized was called 'human ecology.' So now here they all are on one page - the oneness of all.
'Human Ecology' is the relationship of human beings to the planet that we live on, and to our fellow creatures here on earth.
Many scientists and astute observers have expressed doubt, given our current wantonly destructive human ecology, that a) the human race will survive, and b) that planet earth itself will survive our tenancy.
We have two choices:
1) We can sit around eating steak and processed food, watching Fox news, driving in our cars, getting fatter and sicker, and continue existing in a state of willful and hostile ignorance.
2) We can do everything in our power, as individuals and collectively, to replace our destructive habits with positive habits. Going vegetarian, ideally vegan, is happily one of the easiest and best things that you can do for yourself, for your fellow beings, and for Planet Earth on all levels.
When we first started talking about the veg-diet-environment connection, the evidence was there, but few people seemed to care. Energy and environment experts were in denial. Even Al Gore, famous global warming expert and author of 'An Inconvenient Truth', chose to ignore that particular truth.
But nobody can ignore an elephant in the room for long. Now, 'global warming' 'renewable energy', 'sustainability' 'non-gmo' 'permaculture' 'organic' are buzz words, and it's green to be vegetarian, even greener to be vegan.

If you are at all conscious, or have a conscience, you're aware of the game of brinkmanship the human race is playing, and all of the un-green living which has contributed.
On a green scale from 0 - 10: A completely unhealthy diet and lifestyle based on animal products and environmental destruction is a big fat zero. 10 is a diet of whole organic unprocessed plant foods and a sustainable green lifestyle.

There are many ways in which a GMO food could create toxins, allergens, carcinogens, or nutritional problems.
The process of inserting a gene into a DNA can dramatically disrupt the normal genes. One study showed that as many as 5% of the natural genes changed their levels of expression when a single gene was inserted.
Genes can get turned off or deleted, switched on permanently, scrambled, duplicated, or relocated. Gene insertion coupled with growing cells from tissue culture, creates hundreds or thousands of mutations throughout the genome.
On top of all this, the inserted gene can get mutated, truncated, or blended with the crop’s natural gene code. And it appears that the inserted genes get rearranged over time as well. Any of these changes can create serous problems in themselves, or set in motion a chain of reactions that can lead to problems.
Tragically, the studies conducted on GMO crops are not designed to identify the vast majority of possible problems. When scientists understand the dangers involved with GMO technology and then discover what studies are actually conducted, they’re shocked. They realize the extent to which consumers are being used as guinea pigs, just so the biotech industry doesn’t have to spend the money doing the proper research.
There are fewer than 20 peer-reviewed animal-feeding safety studies. And many of these are industry-funded and clearly rigged to avoid finding problems.
No, GMO crops are NOT adequately tested for safety!

From Organic Food: What Is It and Why Should We Eat It?: Organic food is produced through an ecological system of agricultural management, which theoretically produces nutritionally superior plants, resistant to pests & disease.
Actually, the nutritional quality, as well as the pest and disease resistance of organically grown food depends on the quality of the soil.
Therefore organic agriculture builds soil quality through practices such as composting and other natural soil amendments, mulching and green manure, crop rotation, companion planting, water conservation.
Organic farming can be (and often is) practised without regard to the broader context of sustainability, and the term 'organic' includes processed food and consumer products, as well as agriculture.

Organic Inc, Samuel FromartzAgriculture which is geared toward large-scale consumption of animal products uses far more land and water, and degrades the environment in many ways, so it is not sustainable.
Agriculture which raises grain and vegetable crops to directly feed humans uses far less land, water, and other resources, with far less erosion and pollution, so it is easier to sustain.
'Sustainable' is often paired with 'agriculture', but sustainability goes far beyond that, to every aspect of our existence. Basically it's the practice of the Golden Rule - do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
In order to sustain our existence on planet earth without destroying it, we must give back far more than we get, instead of our current practice of taking far more than we give.
The question to ask about any of our actions: "Is it sustainable?"
